Acupuncture for Sleep

Many people suffer from insomnia; this includes troubles falling asleep, frequent or sustained awakenings, early morning awakenings and vivid and or disturbing dreams. This occurs for many different reasons, including; hormonal changes/imbalances, stress, anxiety, depression and lifestyle changes.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in China to treat sleep. Acupuncture has been shown to regulate the nervous system and slow rapid heart rate. Recent research suggests that acupuncture stimulates the release of oxytocin, a hormone and signaling substance that regulates the parasympathetic nervous system. The “fight-or-flight” response is governed by the sympathetic nervous system and initiates when we are stressed. The parasympathetic nervous system has been called the “rest-and-digest” and is the time when the body can heal. When we are in the sympathetic nervous system the body is unable to sleep or properly rest.
Acupuncture treatments often induce a feeling of relaxation and sleepiness. Over the course of a few treatments more noticeable and lasting changes in sleep can be seen as well as an improved feeling of overall well-being.
